The Connected Car - 55% of all cars sold in 2020 will be connected
A recent IHS survey says that 55% of new vehicles sold globally by 2020 will be connected. This will result in nearly half of all vehicles in operation will be connected. The IHS defines "Connected" as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), smartphone integration, telematics, infotainment, remote vehicle controls, WI-FI, and autonomy. In the IHS survey, the IHS learned that consumers crave connectivity in their vehicle. Key findings include:
- ADAS Leads Consumer Preferences
- Software Updates Worth Paying for, Consumers Say
- Navigation Apps Most Popular for In-Car Use of Smartphones
- Autonomy Preferences Vary; Millennials are Onboard
Nerly one third of all respondents said they would ride in a self-driving vehicle and buy one. Another 25% said that they would ride in one, but not purchase one. Millenials are onboard with autonomous cars as more than half would buy a self-driving car and 75% would ride in one.
However, ADAS features are the most popular as US consumer are most willing to pay almost $500 for those features. Interesting contrast to drivers in other countries who expect advanced safety systems to be included at no charge.
Infotainment systems are also popular and 89% of US millennials would pay for infotainment software updates. The most popular used smartphone apps in the car were for navigation, weather, music and news.
