When Will Canada Return to the Table With USA & Mexico To Talk NAFTA?
As Mexico & the United States near an agreement Canada is in talks to be returning to the negotiation table soon. In the past weeks the United States and Mexico appear to be getting very close to an agreement in regards to automotive manufacturing. David MacNaughton, Canada’s ambassador to the U.S., said in a recent interview, "If they can resolve their differences on that, then I think we can move ahead and have the three of us talk about some of the other issues that affect all of us.”
A quick three way NAFTA deal could still be on the horizon but crucial points must be agreed upon. Canada is still in opposition to the United States’ proposals for a “sunset clause’ - this would allow a member nation to withdraw from the agreement after a 5 year term. Prime Minister Trudeau said back in June after the Group of the Seven Summit, “I think there are various discussions about alternatives that would not be that, and that would not be entirely destabilizing for a trade deal, and I think we are open to creativity.”
Summer 2018 has seen the bulk of negotiations play out as an uphill battle. Hopefully we will see some resolution long before the new Mexican president takes office in December.
